A classic English copper-lustre milk jug/pitcher with a vivid cobalt blue mid-band hand-decorated in gilt foliate scrolls. Bulbous body on a ring foot and a shaped handle; interior in a pale gray glaze. A handsome, display-worthy example of 19th-century Staffordshire lustreware.
Materials: Earthenware pottery with copper-lustre glaze; cobalt blue enamel band with hand-painted gilt decoration; clear interior glaze.
Style/Theme: Victorian; Staffordshire copper-lustre. Floral/foliate scroll motif.
Age: Circa 1830–1860.
Maker/Brand: Unmarked, typical of Staffordshire potteries of the period (many small workshops produced this form).
Country of origin: England.
Dimensions: Approx. 6 in wide (spout to handle) x 5 in tall.
Condition: Good antique condition with honest age/wear. Overall lustre wear, surface scratching, and speckling/oxidation to the copper finish; scattered glaze pops and small losses to the gilt on the band; interior shows age spots and kiln inclusions; foot and rim wear from use. No structural cracks noted; presents well.
Food safety: Not recommended for food or drink use due to unknown historic glaze composition (common for 19th-c. lustreware). Best for decorative/display.
